Update 2026: Clinical Pearls for Community Pharmacists Managing Uncomplicated UTI, Shingles, and Penicillin Allergy

Dr. Wong is an infectious disease consultant with the Fraser Health Authority, practicing at Royal Columbian Hospital and Eagle Ridge Hospital. His outpatient practice focuses on chronic viral hepatitis and HIV. He is a member of Fraser Health’s antimicrobial stewardship program committee and contributes to guideline development and review. As a Clinical Assistant Professor in UBC’s Division of Infectious Diseases, he advocates for evidence-based, high-value medical care. His initiatives include establishing a complex outpatient oral antimicrobial therapy program (COpAT) to reduce reliance on IV antibiotics and promoting laboratory stewardship in collaboration with medical specialists.

Description

This session will help community pharmacists develop an approach to the diagnosis and management of uncomplicated UTI, shingles and penicillin allergy. In addition, there will be a particular focus on avoiding common pitfalls when encountering these common conditions. Participants will also learn how to spot red flags that might indicate a complication requiring urgent or specialist evaluation.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Apply simple strategies to diagnose and treat acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections (e.g., acute bacterial cystitis).
• Approach the assessment and management of patients with suspected shingles.
• Identify and address common pitfalls in managing patients with a penicillin allergy label.
