Update 2026: Vital Signs Virtually: A Primer for Pharmacists

Tony Seet is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC. A UBC alumnus, he earned his BScPharm in 1999 and continues to practice as a community pharmacist. Since joining the faculty in 2009, he has contributed to integrating physical assessment and lab values interpretation training, developing scope-of-practice activities, and enhancing instructional delivery through videos and online learning tools. He currently teaches in the Entry-to-Practice PharmD Program, co-leads Professional Year 1 Integration Activities, co-coordinates the Peer Teaching in Pharmacy Skills elective, and teaches in the Administration of Injections course.

Description

Join us for a technique-focused session on vital signs measurement. We’ll review the assessment of temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure using different routes and methods, and share some practical tips. This session will demonstrate correct techniques and the use of various instruments to accurately measure your patient’s vital signs.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate correct techniques for measuring body temperature using oral, axillary, rectal, and tympanic methods.
  • Accurately assess pulse rate using radial, brachial, carotid, pedal, and apical sites.
  • Evaluate respiratory rate through observation, auscultation, and palpation.
  • Measure blood pressure using both automatic and manual methods.
